Even with bicycle helmets, development hasn’t stood still. In 2026, there are exciting new features. Here’s a list of 7 points you should know about current bicycle helmets.

These topics are covered in our bicycle helmet guide 2026:

  • What’s new? Technologies, materials, accessories
  • What makes helmets smart?
  • Where is the trend going for helmets for different types of bikes?
  • Weight
  • A few helmet recommendations
  • Do you need a new bicycle helmet in 2026?
  • Frequently asked questions & answers

1. Reminder ⚠️ Why a good bicycle helmet is essential — even in 2026!

  • Safety first: head injuries aren’t a joke — so: never ride without a helmet! Whether on a road bike, the MTB or in the city.
  • Especially on the E-Bike : helmet on! You’re faster — and that increases the risk of accidents.
  • Comfort decides how the ride feels: light, well ventilated, ergonomic — otherwise riding isn’t fun. Modern helmets take fit seriously!
  • Technology makes a bicycle helmet safe — and there are always good, innovative ideas here. WaveCel, MIPS or adaptive ventilation — new materials and new manufacturing techniques make helmets lighter, more comfortable and safer.
  • Sometimes it’s small things that improve the helmet — for example reflective fibres in the strap webbing.
  • Helmets are becoming more specific: city, Gravel bike or with E-Bike standard… for every intended use there’s a suitable helmet.  ☝️ That’s a good thing too, because experience shows that in the different disciplines there are different types of falls, accidents and injuries. If the helmet is fitted properly, it can protect you better.

💡Tip: Read this blog if you want general information about bicycle helmets — i.e. the why, material information or innovations. After that, it continues in the online shop, where in the bicycle helmets category you’ll find all the important information for buying.

2. What’s new ❓

Material:

  • Instead of solid material foam — this clever swap brings one thing above all: lightness.
  • The in-mould construction has prevailed. Here, the inner foam is directly connected to the outer shell instead of just being glued. Guaranteed to hold!
  • Honeycomb structures make helmets light and still stable.
  • Proprietary technologies make certain manufacturers’ helmets particularly interesting (Leatt 360° Turbine Tech, for example, see image).
  • On bicycles,  carbon is almost old news — now this stable and very light material is also arriving in the top segment of bicycle helmets.
  • More and more helmets have an anti-microbial interior — hygienically clean and low-odour, and usually washable too.
  • Silicone pads on the openings where the glasses are clipped in provide good grip and a secure, quiet transport of the glasses.

Shape:

  • That not only bikes, but also helmets are tested in a wind tunnel today isn’t a secret. Aerodynamics is simply important. Helmets are repeatedly revised so you can save the necessary watts faster by a fraction of a second.
  • Where do you put the bicycle glasses? Good question — you’ve probably already seen how athletes clip the glasses into the helmet — upside down, of course, for better aerodynamics. Manufacturers are picking up on this trend and shape the ventilation slots so the glasses arms fit well into them.
  • Ventilation: Ventilation plays a big role especially in sport, training and tours. In current models, strategically placed ventilation openings and air channels improve cooling. Where a lot of sweat flows, that’s particularly important. Now you might be thinking: “That’s not new, is it!?” You’re right — bicycle helmets have had air holes for many years. But in 2026, we’re actually seeing another improvement in air cooling.

❗That’s how it works: Modern materials and innovative construction methods make it possible to break through the helmet surface more generously without endangering stability. More air holes with good stability is the result.

Technology 2026:

  • Improved lighting 1: Bike helmets with lights visible from more than 400 metres? No! Yes! Wow 😲!
  • Improved lighting 2: Visible in all directions — 360° lighting on the helmet is particularly safe.
  • Improved lighting 3: Indicators and brake lights have been missing on the cycle path so far. 2026 helmets can close this gap.
  • Battery operation: Helmet lights have existed for longer; with the new model year, almost all models have switched from battery operation to rechargeable.
  • Connectivity: An app for the helmet? That exists too now. This lets you control the lighting easily from your phone. More on that right below “Smart bicycle helmets”.
  • So far,  fall sensors and live trackers haven’t become widespread, but they are available. If you ride further out or often on your own, it may be worth specifically looking for this feature.
  • Synchronisable lighting — blinking in sync instead of following the chaos principle causes less confusion.

Helmet accessories 2026:

  • The rain cover of the new age: Not everyone wants to pull a neon-yellow bag over their helmet when it rains. The first shaped, aerodynamic rain protection covers are on the market. They clip onto the helmet and seal it like a second outer shell.
  • Intercom for retrofitting - connect two bicycle helmets and enjoy not only the ride, but also exciting conversations!

🛜 Smart bicycle helmets – communication is important!

With the technology, you’ve already read it — a high-quality bicycle helmet makes a leap towards high-tech in 2026. Some of it is gimmicks, but some features can genuinely improve safety. A lit helmet is for example a really safe thing!

What is synchronisable lighting?

A cyclist or a group that blinks like Christmas lights causes more confusion in road traffic. Modern, smart bicycle helmets therefore offer synchronisable lighting. Here, the lights on the bicycle helmets and also the lights on the bikes can be controlled so they generate synchronised blinking signals.

Communication

There are also Bluetooth connections for hands-free devices and speakers. If you don’t want to ride with headphones, we recommend this, especially if you connect your navigation. That way you don’t miss the directions. Your fitness app commands can also come directly from the helmet. Our tip: If the bicycle helmet you choose can’t provide the latter, you can create the connection between two helmets at a limited distance using an intercom set.

Trends 2026 🚲 helmets for different types of bikes

E-Bike

Special E-Bike helmets are mainly available in the city and trekking area. In general, E-Bike helmets have improved impact protection. In new models, you often find particularly bright lighting here and especially many helmets have a visor. That way you’re safe even at high speeds, easy to see and without bugs in your eyes.

Road bike

As always… the road bike world wants it lighter. Partly, the road helmets for the 2026 season are under 200 grams (but then in small sizes). In general, there’s less and less material here; the helmets consist more or less of ventilation openings, because ventilation is the most important feature here. Our tip: look for practical details like retention openings for the glasses.

Gravel/tours

Gravel bike helmets are more or less road bike helmets, but the priority is more safety in a variety of riding situations than lightweight construction and ventilation. Here too, the lighting is increasingly being perfected so you’re well seen on long tours.

MTB

Stability that provides enough safety while also being less weight and having enough ventilation… that’s the class goal for the current MTB helmets. We’re also seeing new proprietary safety features. Our tip: with full-face helmets, work is being done to make the helmet easier to remove — especially for riders who have crashed. Hopefully you’ll never need to use this feature. But when buying, make sure it saves you — in the truest sense of the word — your neck!

City helmets

Here, there are mainly details that secure you better in city traffic. Integrated lights, reflectors, hands-free devices or brake lights are important safety guarantees.

3. How much does a modern bicycle helmet weigh?

Bicycle helmets will be a few grams lighter again in 2026. But specifically: what does a current bicycle helmet weigh? It depends a lot on the equipment and construction.

  • Road helmet – 180 grams (POC Cytal Lite, size S)
  • Gravel bike helmet – 300 grams (Smith Network MIPS)
  • City helmet with all-round lighting, indicators and brake light – 370 grams (Lumos Ultra)
  • MTB helmet – 400 grams (Fox Racing Speedframe RS, size M/L)
  • E-Bike helmet for the city – 490 grams (Lumos Ultra E-Bike)
  • E-Bike helmet for the city with MIPS – 530 grams (Lumos Ultra E-Bike MIPS)
  • MTB full-face helmet – 1130 grams (Fox Racing Rampage, size M)

FAQs helmet weight:

You may have wondered what influences the weight of a bicycle helmet. Here are a few important factors:

➽ Does the weight differ in different sizes?

A bigger helmet needs more material, logically. But how does that affect the weight?

Example 1: POC Cytal Lite road helmet: size S 180 grams – size M 200 grams – size L 220 grams

Example 2: FOX RACING Rampage MTB full-face helmet: size S 1130 grams – size M 1130 grams – size XL 1255 grams

➽ Does the price have an influence?

You’ve probably already guessed it — high-end helmets are lighter. But also more expensive. Here are two examples — similar helmet, different prices:

Bicycle helmet model

RRP

Weight

POC Ventral Air (road)

182 euros

280 grams

POC Cytal Lite (road)

350 euros

200 grams

Fox Racing Rampage RS (full-face)

599 euros

980 grams (size M)

Fox Racing Rampage (full-face)

299 euros

1130 grams

➽ Does safer mean heavier?

You can see it above: an extra layer of safety like MIPS makes the helmet a few grams heavier. Is it worth giving up MIPS for a lighter helmet, for example? NO! By no means!

➽ Does equipment affect weight?

The Urban helmet Coban from HJC is available in two versions — with a visor and without. That makes a weight difference of 385 vs. 468 grams. Lighting, a fall sensor or an intercom are practical features overall, but they add weight!

4. The best bicycle helmets 2026

It’s hard to say which is the best bicycle helmet — fit, Look and features have to match, and of course price is always an important point too. But we’ve picked a few models that we can particularly recommend:

The Lumos Ultra city helmet is especially leading the way when it comes to connectivity. You can pair the smart helmets with your phone via an app and thus control, for example, the lighting.

5. Do you need a new bicycle helmet in 2026?

Why should you buy a new bicycle helmet this year? Here are a few good reasons:

  • Did you know…? Bicycle helmets have an expiry date!

For 2026, that means you need to replace your bicycle helmet if it was made in 2021 or earlier.

  • New helmets are good. Okay, they don’t “come back”. But you’ll probably wear a nice new helmet more readily than last year’s sweaty, slightly dented one.
  • If your helmet has been dropped or has even survived a crash, you should replace it.
  • You read above what modern 2026 helmets can do. Maybe you want a bit more safety or improved communication with your fellow riders? Then it’s time for a new helmet.

6. Kids’ bicycle helmets – what you need to know

Kids’ bicycle helmets are usually replaced because they no longer fit. If you’re looking for a new kids’ helmet, the question is: what actually makes sense for a kids’ helmet? A hands-free device? A fall sensor? Kids usually aren’t out for long and they’re also not riding alone. That’s why a good helmet (possibly with MIPS, etc.) is a good purchase, but it’s completely fine to buy a simple brand helmet with a standard seal and without lots of extras.

🔎 FAQs

How much does a good bicycle helmet cost?

You can buy simple bicycle helmets from reputable manufacturers for as little as around 50 euros. In the sale, it can be even cheaper. For a good, light and well-ventilated road helmet, you shouldn’t shop below 150 euros. Top MTB helmets from 2026 cost around 250 euros; for a current full-face helmet you’ll be looking at about 300 to 500 euros. Light, illuminated and with a Bluetooth interface — if you want these features on a city bicycle helmet, you should expect around 250 euros; without them it’s significantly cheaper.

Are expensive bicycle helmets safer?

All bicycle helmets sold in Europe must meet certain safety standards. And those standards are met by cheaper helmets too. If you buy a cheap helmet from a good brand, it’s tested and safe. If it includes technologies like WaveCel or MIPS, it’s safer. With lighting and so on, it meets the currently possible safety requirements optimally.

Can you buy an older helmet or a used helmet?

We’d rather advise against it. The used helmet may already be damaged and may no longer provide full break protection. Older helmets may no longer be safe due to material ageing.

Which standard is important?

  • In the EU, an adult bicycle helmet must meet the EN 1078 standard.
  • For children’s helmets, there’s a special standard — look for EN 1080.
  • For E-Bike and S-Pedelec, the NTA standard 8776 applies.

Our buying tip: When in doubt, it’s smarter to have the safe helmet! If you ride E and regular bikes, buy the helmet with the E-Bike standard!

Illuminated helmets – answers to common questions

How does the brake light on the bicycle helmet work?

The brake light is controlled by a motion sensor that detects changes in speed.

How does the indicator on the bicycle helmet work?

A turn signal is integrated into your helmet, but how does it know you want to turn? The helmet only knows if you tell it. For that, there’s a remote control that you attach to the handlebar.

Are flashing lights allowed?

Since a change to the StVZO, flashing lights are allowed on bicycles and bicycle helmets, but they aren’t required.

Attention! As experience shows, drivers of cars don’t know these technologies yet! That’s why you should always give hand signals as well.

How long does the helmet lighting battery last?

Of course, this depends on how much battery capacity the manufacturer installs — an important point, because a large battery = long runtime ➽ but more weight. But on a helmet, having as little weight as possible is a real advantage. Depending on battery capacity, the helmet lighting lasts about 10 hours in blink mode and 2.5 hours in continuous operation. Other important factors: how bright are the lamps and how many LEDs are installed. Our tip: If you want to ride with light on the helmet for as long as possible, compare the product descriptions — there are differences.

How long does the bicycle helmet need to charge?

You should allow for 3 to 6 hours of charging time.
