Is a E-Bike worth it? Pros & cons

Which E-Bike suits me?

↪“The E-Bike” doesn’t exist! 👀

Today, E-bikes are just as versatile and specialised as bicycles. That means: there’s a suitable Pedelec for every riding style and every intended use. That’s why current models aren’t just E-bikes, but city E-bikes, E-MTBs, E-touring bikes and so on. Here you’ll find out what electric bikes there are and what makes them stand out.

A tip right at the start: If you don’t want to commit, we recommend buying an E-trekking bike. You get an excellent average — long range, solid torque, a comfortable riding position and a robust build.

⚖️ Lightweight E-bikes

Since 2024, a new trend has been noticeable that continues into 2026: lightweight E-bikes or “Light Electric Bikes” are taking over the market. Here you get lightweight components, small batteries and invisible hub motors.

✅ Lightweight E-bikes are light, efficient and often cheaper; the drive is almost invisible

❌ In return, you get less range and less torque

🔌 What you should know in 2026 about E-Bike drives

↪ Batteries & motors in focus

Without a drive system, it’s just a bike — not an E-bike! While regular bikes naturally have their advantages too, electric bikes bring built-in tailwind — because they have a motor, a battery, sensors and an onboard computer.

⚙️ Mid-drive vs. rear motor vs. front motor – motor position

Mid-drive motors are the standard on high-performance E-bikes. For trekking bikes, MTB or SUVs, there’s nothing better!

Rear motors were almost extinct, but now they’re becoming more common again. They’re small, efficient and practically invisible. That makes them an excellent solution for lightweight E-bikes, relaxed city E-bikes and clean looks.

Front motors are still rather rare and may be waiting for their revival.

250 W – more power unfortunately isn’t possible, because the permitted motor power is capped by law. The motors differ significantly in torque — the actual force they deliver.

Motor power : Drive torque in comparison:

  • E-MTB: approx. 100 Nm
  • Cargo bikes: 80 to 100 Nm
  • Trekking E-bikes: approx. 80 Nm
  • City E-bikes: approx. 40 to 60 Nm
  • Light E-bikes: approx 40 Nm

E-Bike motors – big or small?

  • Big motor: Lots of power, lots of weight, clearly visible, expensive, high power consumption
  • Small motor: Targeted, moderate assistance, light, less visible, cheaper, lower power consumption

⚡E-Bike batteries in comparison

Where is the battery on the E-Bike?

External batteries have become rare, and luggage rack batteries are also hardly available anymore. Most E-Bike batteries are built into the down tube of the frame today. The question is: is the battery removable or not? Important for the charging process: some batteries can be taken out for charging, others can’t.

Is there a range extender?

A range extender (range extension) is a nice thing if you occasionally need more battery. For some drive systems, you can buy an additional battery, put it in the bottle holder and almost double your range.

Battery capacity in comparison

  • under 400 Wh: light E-bikes
  • around 400 Wh: short rides, flat routes, smaller motors; city bikes, leisure bikes
  • 400 - 600 Wh: long commuting distances, E-trekking; trekking bikes, SUVs, city commuters
  • 600 - 800 Wh: large range, mountains and/or high motor strength; trekking bikes, eMTBs
  • Range extender: depending on the manufacturer, around 200 - 300 Wh

Battery & range – how far can you really go?

It’s hard to say how far you’ll get on a single battery charge. It depends on factors like motor capacity, total weight or road surface. Headwinds or temperature also play a role, and of course the battery’s capacity.

Which E-Bike drive is the right one?

Based on our experience, it makes sense to choose a bike that fits you well, because that’s more important than deciding on a specific drive or drive manufacturer.

But a few basic questions will help you:

  • Do you like relying on the experience of proven manufacturers? ➜ The “big 3” are Bosch, Shimano and Yamaha.
  • Do you want your bike to push with lots of power? ➜ Then you need a big motor with lots of torque.
  • Do you ride steep climbs or with a lot of total weight? ➜ A big motor helps here too.
  • Do you ride short, flat routes and bike + rider + luggage aren’t too heavy? ➜ Then a smaller motor is enough.
  • Is charging more often not a problem? ➜ Then a smaller battery is enough.
  • Do you want lots of range? ➜ Then the battery should have as many Wh as possible.
  • Do you sometimes want more range? ➜ Look for a drive system that lets you buy a range extender, i.e. an additional battery.
  • Do you only need occasional assistance? ➜ Then a light E-Bike is enough.

🤔 Which E-Bike for which intended use?

Further up, we explained the characteristics of the different E-bikes. Here we have a few basic tips for choosing the right bike for you (more details in our E-Bike guide)

🕖 Riding time

Riding time plays an important role when choosing the right E-bike. But it also helps with the basic decision “bike or E-Bike”!

If, for example, you want to ride a long commute every day on your two-wheeler, you’ll find it much easier on the E-Bike than on a bicycle.

E-bikes for short distances

Small, affordable batteries are enough, because you can charge more often ➽ available on E-city bikes and on the light E-Bike

Long-distance E-bikes

For long distances, cycling trips or full days in the saddle, you need three things:

  • A large battery ➽ batteries over 400 Wh are recommended; trekking bikes and long-distance hardtails are at the front of the list
  • A comfortable riding position ➽ SUVs or trekking bikes are especially comfortable.
  • You may need luggage ➽ city bikes, SUVs and E-trekking bikes usually have a luggage rack
  • Is your goal to ride fast and far? ➽ A road-bike look combined with versatility? That’s available in Gravel E-bikes & road bikes!

☁️ Comfort

The longer you want to ride, the nicer it is if your E-Bike brings certain comforts.

  • Upright riding position and ergonomics = comfortable riding position ➽ City-E-Bike, SUVs and trekking bikes are right at the top
  • Good equipment also falls under “comfort” ➽ mudguards, luggage racks, lights and so on — you’ll find them on city E-bikes, trekking bikes and on SUVs.
  • If powerful motor assistance is important to you, look for a drive with medium to high torque.

🪨 Surface

Not every E-Bike copes well with bad roads! For off-road riding, you need wide tyres, good gearing, and it doesn’t hurt if the drive has power reserves.

  • An Hardtail brings wide tyres and a suspension fork ➽ ideal for bad roads, country tracks or even off-road
  • The SUV and the trekking E-Bike also have enough tyre width for rough surfaces
  • The city-E-Bike feels most at home on well-developed roads.

🗻 Climbing

Climbs are hard work, and your E-Bike is happy to support you. But only if it meets the requirements.

  • With a comprehensive gear range, you conquer climbs more efficiently ➽ available on trekking-E-Bike and on eMTBs.
  • If you ride big climbs regularly, you need a large battery and a strong motor ➽ Trekking bikes and e-hardtails ready to roll are also here.
  • On the flat, you get by with fewer gears ➽ E-city bikes have smaller gear ranges or hub gears. It’s cheaper too!

☝️Typical mistakes when buying a E-Bike

Can you make a mistake when buying an E-bike? Actually (almost) not. Still, there are 3 points we want to make you aware of:

1. Buy the right drive!

If the drive doesn’t match your plans, the whole E-Bike won’t be fun. An oversized drive costs you unnecessary money, charging time and makes the bike heavier than it needs to be. An undersized drive is overwhelmed by total weight and climbs; in addition, the battery is constantly empty.

2. Find the E-Bike type that matches your plans!

Example 1: You ride 5 kilometres to work over flat roads in all weather? A chunky, heavy and not really efficient Fully without mudguards is “over the top”. A city-E-Bike would be exactly right for this job. And it’s cheaper too.

Example 2: You want to scrub trails, but with an E. A retro Pedelec for the city with chrome lights and a front luggage rack looks cool, but off-road won’t be fun.

It’s definitely worth buying the right bike for your plans, or keeping all options open with a versatile Pedelec (Our tip: trekking-E-Bike or an SUV!).

3. The E-Bike doesn’t suit you

E-bikes and bicycles come in different sizes and fits. Just like clothes or shoes, your E-Bike will fit you better if you buy it in the correct size. Too big or too small will be uncomfortable or, worst case, dangerous — because you can’t control the bike properly. Today, the online shop offers size calculators that help you choose the right size after a few clicks.

💡 E-Bike 2026 – what’s new?

Here are a few exciting points where we expect improvements in 2026:

  • Revised drives: Somewhat lighter, better sensors, optimised software.
  • Integrated controls: Fewer and fewer drives need a display; a few buttons on the handlebar or frame are enough! You’ll get the information on your smartphone.
  • Less weight: Everything on the bike becomes lighter, and E-bikes lose weight too. Lightweight E-bikes weigh about 17 kilos; with full equipment they come in at just under 25 kilos
  • Perfectly integrated drives: More and more E-Bike brands build their own drives so they fit optimally into the bike’s concept.
  • New concepts: Especially when it comes to cargo-E-Bike, a lot is happening. The bikes become more efficient, handle more payload or distribute the load intelligently.
  • Improved sensors: To ensure the drive system supports you optimally, it has numerous sensors that analyse the ride and help meter the motor power. Here the technology becomes smarter, more precise and more efficient.
  • More choice in riding position: Frame construction is changing with new motor systems, so there’s more variety in the geometry. Upright, sporty-low or somewhere in between… a comfortable riding position is no longer a problem!
  • What does a good E-Bike cost in 2026? That depends heavily on the type of E-bike and the equipment, but buying an E-bike could become significantly cheaper in 2026 than you might think. From a lightweight E-urban bike for an amazing 700 euros to the Fully beast for several thousand euros — there’s plenty of room, and there’s an Pedelec for every budget.

📝 Checklist: choose the right E-Bike safely

1. Where do you want to ride? What’s the road surface like, are there hills?

➜ Tyre width, suspension and gearing
